Focus and Scope of Journal

The PUP JOURNAL OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (PUPJST) publishes original scientific papers and application-focused articles from recently accomplished research and ongoing studies on physical sciences, life sciences, food sciences, nutrition and dietetics, agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, computing and information sciences, mathematics, engineering, and technology. The articles must pose valuable hypotheses to derive novel perspectives, and verify scientific concepts and innovation in technological advances. The journal does not publish purely descriptive articles that descend from a well-documented exposition, short communication, survey, or even a comprehensive review of a currently active area of research.

Open Access Policy

All published articles will be freely available to the public without any subscription fees. However, a charge for the print version of a journal is permitted.

Publication charges

We do not accept any article processing charges (APCs) from the submitting authors.

Indexing and Database

The PUP Journal of Science and Technology is indexed in the Andrew Gonzales Philippine Citation Index (AGPCI) and archived in the Philippine E-Journals (PEJ).

Review Policy

All PUP Journals apply the double-blind peer review process where both authors and reviewers will remain anonymous throughout the review process.

Submission

In the submission of a research manuscript, researchers should carefully select a journal that aligns with the scope and focus of their study.  It is essential to review the journal's guidelines for authors and formatting requirements to ensure compliance. Once the manuscript is ready, it can be submitted through the journal's online submission system.

Editorial Assessment

After the manuscript has been submitted, the managing editor and/or the editor-in-chief of the journal performs an initial assessment, which involves evaluating the manuscript's compatibility with the journal’s thematic areas, overall quality, and adherence to formatting guidelines.  If the manuscript meets these criteria, it proceeds to the next step.  However, if the manuscript is deemed unsuitable for publication, it may be rejected at this stage, and the researcher will receive a notification of rejection.

Peer Review Assignment

If the manuscript passes the initial assessment, the managing editor assigns it to subject matter experts often referred to as reviewers, selected based on their knowledge, experience, and ability to provide valuable feedback on the manuscript.  To maintain objectivity and prevent bias, the identities of both the reviewers and authors remain confidential throughout the peer review process.  This double-blind approach ensures that evaluations are based solely on the merits of the manuscript, without any influence from personal or professional relationships.

Peer Review

Reviewers thoroughly evaluate the manuscript's content, methodology, originality, and significance.  They assess the strengths and weaknesses of the study, identify any errors or gaps in the research, and provide constructive feedback to improve the manuscript. They may also suggest revisions, additional experiments, or further analysis if necessary. The review process is typically conducted within a specific timeframe, which varies depending on the journal's policies.

Decision

Once the peer review is complete, the reviewers submit their reports to the editor. Based on the feedback received, the editor decides regarding the manuscript. The decision may either be:

Acceptance: The manuscript is accepted for publication without any major revisions.

Minor revisions: The manuscript requires minor revisions and improvements before final acceptance.

Major revisions: The manuscript requires significant revisions and further review before a final decision can be made.

Rejection: The manuscript is not suitable for publication in the journal.

Revision and Resubmission

If the manuscript requires revisions, the researcher is notified and provided with the reviewers' comments. Researchers should carefully address each comment, revise the manuscript accordingly, and provide a detailed response to the editor explaining the changes made. The revised manuscript, along with the response letter, is then resubmitted to the journal.

Final Decision and Publication

Upon receiving the revised manuscript, the managing editor re-evaluates it along with the responses and revisions. Depending on the extent of revisions, the manuscript may be sent back to the reviewers for further evaluation. The final decision is made by the managing editor, considering the reviewers' recommendations and the revised manuscript. If accepted, the galley proof of the accepted manuscript will be returned to the author for final proofreading. This galley proof must be returned to the Managing Editor for editing until the submitting author approves a proof.

Post-Publication

Once the article is published, researchers should actively promote their work through various channels, such as social media, academic conferences, and collaboration with other researchers. It is crucial to engage with the scientific community, respond to queries and comments, and build on the research through further studies or collaborations.

Submission Preparation Checklist

1.     The submission is original and written by the stated author(s).

2.     All the authors have read the manuscript and agreed to publish it.

3.     The submission has not been previously published nor currently submitted and will not be submitted to another journal while under review by PUPJST.

4.     The submission file is in Microsoft Word file format using the PUPJST template.

5.     The text is single-spaced with a 10-point font in Times New Roman and the manuscript text is not in boldface. Each line of the manuscript should be numbered for easy reference during review and corrections.

6.     The text employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses of the references).

7.     The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements of the American Psychological Association (APA). All citations should be reflected in the reference list.

8.     Tables, figures, illustrations, and other supplementary materials should have a short descriptive title, are properly referenced in the manuscript, and placed with the text or appropriate points rather than at the end.

9.    All tables and figures, where applicable, should include all units, clear legends, and suitable footnotes.

10.   Tables should be in an editable format and should not be in graphic objects.

11.   Spelling and grammar checks have been performed.

12.   After acceptance of the manuscript (during copyediting), proofs in Portable Document File (PDF) format indicating changes and corrections will be sent to the author(s) for approval.

Guide for Authors

1. Only manuscripts that fall within the focus and scope of the Journal will be considered.

2. Article will be subjected to a plagiarism check and will be considered acceptable based on the following similarity percentage:

  • undergraduate thesis and other academic works ≤ 20%
  • graduate thesis/dissertation ≤ 15%
  • university-supported and assisted projects ≤ 10%

If the article does not pass the plagiarism check, it will be returned to the author.

3.  Manuscripts should be divided into the following sections (in this order):

  • Title Page

The title page should provide the title of the article, list the full names and institutional affiliation of all authors and indicate the corresponding author.

  • Abstract

The Abstract of the manuscript should not exceed 350 words and must reflect the following parts: background or the context and purpose of the study; results or the main findings; conclusions or brief summary and potential implications. Minimize the use of abbreviations and do not cite references in the abstract. Graphics are not allowed.

  • Keywords

Provide at least three but at most six keywords representing the main content of the article

  • Introduction

The introduction should be written in a way that is understandable to researchers without specialist knowledge in that area and must clearly state (and if helpful, illustrate) the background to the research and its aims. The section should end with a brief statement of what is being reported in the article.

Standard chemical symbols and abbreviations may be used in the text, but full term should be given when first mentioned. Units of measurements should be spelled out except when preceded by a numeral. If no-metric measurement units are used the metric equivalent should be mentioned. The complete scientific name of every organism must be cited when it is first mentioned in the text. The generic name may be abbreviated thereafter, except when there are references to other genera with the same initial. The use of common names must be accompanied by the correct scientific name on first use.

  • Methodology

This section should include the design of the study, the type of materials involved, a clear description of all comparisons, and the type of analysis used, to enable replication. For studies involving human participants, a statement detailing ethical approval and consent should be included (e.g., from National Ethics Committee).

  • Results and Discussion

The results and discussion may be combined into a single section or presented separately. This section may also be broken into subsections with short, informative headings. Number the subsections consecutively using Arabic numerals with decimal points. Use sentence case and italicized subheadings.

  • Conclusions

This should state clearly the main conclusions of the research and give a clear explanation of their importance and relevance. Summary illustrations may be included.

  • Recommendations (if any)
  • Acknowledgments

Please acknowledge anyone who contributed to the article by making a substantial contribution to conceptions, design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data, or who was involved in drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content, but who does not meet the criteria for authorship. Please also include the source(s) of funding for each author, and for the manuscript preparation. Authors must describe the role of the funding body, if any, in design, in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; in the writing of the manuscript; and in the decision to submit the manuscript for publication. Please also acknowledge anyone who contributed materials essential for the study. If a language editor has made a significant revision of the manuscript, we recommend that you acknowledge the editor by name, where possible.

Authors should obtain permission to acknowledge from all those mentioned in the Acknowledgements section.

  • References

References Cited in the text should be presented according to the APA (American Psychological Association) Style Manual, latest edition. The list of References should be given at the end of the paper, immediately following the section on acknowledgment, if any.

4.     In preparing illustrations and figures, ensure that each figure includes a single illustration and should fit on a single page in portrait format. If a figure consists of separate parts, it is important that a single composite illustration file be submitted which contains all parts of the figure. The following file formats can be accepted: PDF, TIFF, PNG, JPEG or BMP. Note that it is the responsibility of the author(s) to obtain permission from the copyright holder to reproduce figures or tables that have previously been published elsewhere.

5.     Proofs will be sent by email to the corresponding author and are expected to proofread the article carefully. The corrected proof should be received by the administration within two working days.

6.     The PUPJST adheres to the following four criteria in authorship recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE)
